"NO IDLING ZONE"

Mt. Sentinel Secondary School is now a “No Idling Zone”

This means that we want all drivers of vehicles to turn their engines off when they are on the school grounds.

If every driver of a light-duty vehicle in Canada avoided idling for just five minutes a day, we would save 1.9 million liters of fuel and prevent more than 1.4 million tones of greenhouse gas CO2 from entering the atmosphere and contributing to climate change.

A recent study of Canadian driving habits and behavior suggests that in the peak of winter‚ we each voluntarily idle our vehicles for five minutes a day‚ making a combined total of more than 75 million minutes a day.

Inspiring Youth for Change with the support of Mt. Sentinel School administration has deemed our School as a ‘No Idling Zone’

The purpose of this campaign is to:

1.        Take proactive action in reducing green house gas emissions

2.        Change public habit and behavior through education

3.        Do something about ensuring a sustainable future and a future for our generation

4.        Save people and the school district money on gas they are using when idling

5.        Take an action to reach the Millennium Development Goal # 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability which states:

Target 9. Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies                                                                                                                                                                                                       and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources

6.        Take a leadership role in setting an example to other schools, school districts, corporations and communities and individuals.

7.        We can’t wait for our governments to enforce laws and changes to halt climate change. We have to be the change.

8.        Take responsibility because it’s the right thing to do.

Signs are posted around the outside of the school.

IYC youth will be outside on occasion to remind drivers by handing out information.
